Years after the unfortunate 2005 Sosoliso plane crash headed for Portharcourt which claimed 107 lives out of 109 including the late Pastor Bimbo Odukoya, Kechi Okuchi who happens to be one of the only two survivors of the crash has not only inspired thousands of people by her survival story but has left us mesmerized and many at the point of tears with her amazing voice as stepped on the stage of America’s Got Talent and left the judges with their jaws on the floor as she sang Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud”.
Her’s is a particularly touching story because it seemed like a perfectly normal day when she boarded a flight to return home from boarding school at Loyola Jesuit College for the holidays, Abuja at the time and sitting next to her on board the plane was a close friend who didn’t make it but she was blessed to one of the only two people that survived, she sustained major burns which disfigured the young damsel, after a 100 nerve wrecking surgeries and skin grafts in the US, she has not given up on life, even though she doesn’t look the same.
Here what she had to say;
“I remember just saying I don’t know but i think we have to pray or something, i don’t know. We actually never got a chance . That’s the last memory i have before i blacked out. Next thing i knew, i woke up in Mill Park Hospital, South Africa, till this day, i don’t remember the actual impact of the crash.
Kechi, who after several surgeries graduated with a First Class degree from University of Thomas Houston, Texas on May 16th, 2015 was also inducted into 6 academic honor societies. She was the most outstanding student for her major in Economics and has already been accepted into graduate school for her MBA. Her tale is definitely one to learn from as it inspires hope and the will to never give up on life even when life seems like it would amount to nothing, you have to keep pushing as long as your heart is still beating.
